A Letter From Our Founder
From one chair in a basement to a faith-built beauty and wellness brand rooted in excellence, beauty, and legacy.
Nia Soule began on April 22, 2008, with a dining chair in a basement, a vision from God, and the faith to say yes to small beginnings. What started as one woman’s act of obedience has grown into a salon and spa brand shaped by faith, sacrifice, refinement, and purpose.
The Beginning
It did not begin with a grand salon opening, a polished buildout, or a perfect blueprint. It began with a dining chair in a basement, a vision from God, and the faith to say yes to small beginnings. That beginning will always be sacred to me, because it was more than the start of a business. It was the moment purpose took form. Pull Quote “What began with a dining chair in a basement became a vision shaped by faith, sacrifice, and God’s faithfulness.”
A Calling Bigger Than Hair
There was a time in my life, just after college, when I found myself asking God a very honest question: What is Your plan for my life? What I knew then was that I did not want to build a life around work that made me miserable. I wanted to do something I truly loved — something I could still be passionate about decades later. I wanted my work to be more than a paycheck. I wanted it to be meaningful, purposeful, and fulfilling. As a young Nigerian girl growing up in Lagos, I noticed something that stayed with me. I did not often see Black-owned beauty businesses built with structure, scale, and legacy. I rarely saw examples of businesses that expanded beyond the founder into multiple locations, community impact, and something that could truly last for generations. That absence left an impression on me. Even before I fully understood what my future would look like, something in me was already paying attention to what was missing — and imagining what might be possible.
What I Knew From the Beginning
Hair had always been a part of my story. By the age of 10, I was already doing my sisters’ hair, my cousins’ hair, and learning beauty with my hands long before I understood it as a calling. After relocating to the United States in 2007, I found myself at a crossroads. I had earned a biology degree and was considering a more traditional path, possibly pursuing a master’s degree in public health. But as I prayed for direction, I felt a deep conviction in my spirit that entrepreneurship was the road I was meant to take. It was not the safer choice. It was not the expected choice. But it was the one that felt true. I knew three things. I did not want to build a hustle. I wanted to build a real business — one rooted in excellence, structure, and purpose — that would impact communities and outlive me. I wanted to build a multi-location, transgenerational braid spa and salon — something that could grow beyond one chair, one room, and one season into a lasting legacy. And above all, I wanted to honor God through what some may see as a simple or overlooked gift called hair braiding. Pull Quote “I did not want to build a hustle. I wanted to build a business that would impact communities and outlive me.”
The Foundation of Nia Soule
From the very beginning, this truth was planted deeply into the foundation of Nia Soule: Psalm 1:3 “And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” That scripture gave me courage. It reminded me that when the work is planted in God, led by righteousness, and nurtured with obedience, it will bear fruit in its season. I remember asking God very specifically: Does whatsoever include hair braiding too? Could this humble, culturally familiar, often underestimated gift also be blessed? In my spirit, I heard yes. Yes, even this. Yes, even hair braiding. Yes, even the dream that looked different from what others may have imagined for my life. That yes became the beginning of Nia Soule.
Built Through Faith, Sacrifice, and Grace
I placed one chair in a basement at 5853 Surrey Place in Norcross, Georgia, and welcomed my very first client. She paid $35. I did not have a polished blueprint, deep resources, or guarantees. What I had was faith, vision, and a deep desire to create something different. As a young single mother and immigrant mother, building this dream was not always easy. There were mornings I carried my son, Odin, with me to the salon at 5:30 a.m., doing what mothers do — making a way with what I had and trusting God every step of the journey. In many ways, motherhood and Nia Soule were being built at the same time. Today, watching Odin grow and step into his own future is deeply meaningful to me. What God was building in me as a mother, He was also building in me as a founder, leader, and visionary.
Redefining the Beauty Experience
From the beginning, I wanted women to feel that they were experiencing something different. I did not want them to feel like they were just coming anywhere to get their hair done. I wanted them to experience professionalism, warmth, beauty, intention, and care. I wanted Black hair care to feel refined, polished, and worthy of the women it served. One of the convictions that shaped Nia Soule early on was the belief that African hair braiding could be both culturally rooted and elevated. For too long, braiding had been associated with pain, discomfort, and a lack of professionalism. I believed it could be different. I believed it could be beautiful and gentle, skilled and luxurious. That belief helped shape what became one of our signature standards: ouchless hair braiding. Pull Quote “I wanted to honor God through what some may see as a simple or overlooked gift called hair braiding.”
From One Chair to a Growing Brand
Over time, what started with one chair began to grow. The journey moved from the basement, to salon suites, to the back of a beauty supply store, to Buford Highway, and eventually into our first true luxury Nia Soule location in Norcross. From there, doors continued to open. The vision expanded into Fayetteville, Snellville, and Texas, stretching beyond what I could have imagined in those earliest days. By the grace of God, Nia Soule has grown into more than a salon. It has become a beauty and wellness brand, a source of income for families, an opportunity creator for women, and a company that has opened doors through vendor relationships, partnerships, and major production opportunities. Today, Nia Soule is supported by a talented team of stylists and beauty professionals who help bring our standard of excellence, artistry, and guest care to life every day. What started in my hands has grown beyond me.
More Than Hair
When I look back, I do not just see appointments. I see women restored. I see families touched. I see communities impacted. I see prayers answered. I see cities reached. I see milestones shared. I see beauty used as a vessel for confidence, healing, and renewal. Some of my proudest moments have come from hearing young women say, “Maria, you are the reason I got into cosmetology,” or “Maria, you are the reason I became an entrepreneur.” To know that a vision once carried quietly in my heart has gone on to inspire others to dream bigger about their own lives is one of the greatest honors I could ever receive. Because the truth is, Nia Soule was never meant to be just about me. It was always meant to become something larger than one woman, one chair, or one location. It was meant to become a standard. A model. A legacy. Pull Quote “Nia Soule was never meant to be just about me. It was meant to become a standard, a model, and a legacy.”
What the Journey Has Taught Me
This journey has taught me that vision is powerful, but vision must be refined by character. It has taught me that mistakes do not disqualify you — they teach you. It has taught me that course correction is not failure — it is wisdom. And it has taught me that building something lasting requires more than talent or skill. It requires spiritual intelligence, emotional intelligence, humility, maturity, discipline, and leadership development. Every lesson shaped me. Every challenge developed me. Every stretch deepened my dependence on God.
Chapter Two
Now, I lead Nia Soule into Chapter Two. For me, Chapter Two is about elevation. It is about greater alignment. It is about deeper excellence. It is about building a salon and spa experience that reflects not hustle, but wholeness, beauty, order, impact, and legacy. It is about serving at a higher level. It is about developing stronger leaders. It is about creating more beauty with more intention. It is about continuing to impact lives and communities through the gift God placed in my hands. From a dining chair in a basement to the lives, locations, families, and communities touched over the years, God has been faithful. And I believe with all my heart that the best is still ahead. Pull Quote “The best is still ahead.”
